Product description
Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav (2.2.1849 - 8.11.1921) - poet, dramatist and translator, is one of the most important representatives of Slovak literature. His creative work laid the foundations of modern Slovak poetry. He is the author of broadly conceived cycles of reflective, natural, social and intimate lyrics (Psalms and hymns, Walks in Spring, Walks in Summer, Summer-growth, Dozvuky, Bloody Sonnets) and epic compositions, which depict the life of village people and Slovak gentry (Forester's Wife, Ezo Vlkolinsky, Gabor Vlkolinsky). Biblical epics, presenting Biblical themes in a social and philosophical light, form a distinct group in his writing (Agar, Rachel, Cain, Christmas, The Dream of Solomon). The most important dramatic work is the deeply philosophical tragedy "Herodes and Herodias" , which is regarded as one of the finest examples of Slovak drama. Hviezdoslav's translations of works of world literature are also of great importance. Obverse: The obverse of the coin shows a female face in the form of the crowns of trees and stars. The name of the state SLOVENSKA REPUBLIKA in circumscription, is divided by the coat of arms in the upper margin. The year of issue 1999 is also divided by coat of arms. A designation of the face value is placed inside the lower edge of the coin. Reverse: On the reverse of the coin is a portrait of Pavol Orszagh Hviezdoslav, around which are the years of his birth 1849, his name PAVOL ORSZAGH HVIEZDOSLAV and the date of his death, 1921.
