Grading of coins, medals and banknotes
What is grading?
Grading is the process of verifying the authenticity, determining the condition, and encapsulating (slabbing) coins and banknotes
Simply put, the result of grading is the certification of a given item with an evaluation of its condition. It is intended to ensure that the coin or banknote has been inspected by experts who have confirmed its authenticity and assessed its condition. Grading involves a comprehensive process consisting of the following steps:
- the authenticity of the item is verified,
- its condition is determined,
- the item is placed into a case (also known as a slab), which cannot be opened without destroying it. Slabs also contain basic information about the coin or banknote, alongside its grade and a unique number from the certification authority. Thanks to its certification number, the information about the collector’s item is available worldwide.
